Tipping Point Elections: TvT Republican Viewpoint

Poster: Prokhor Zakharov // Valentin Sigalov

On the coming Tuesday, November 4th, 2014, Pennsylvanian residents will vote on, among other people, the state governor: the incumbent, Republican candidate Tom Corbett or Democrat Tom Wolf.

In this blog, I will try my best to represent the Republican viewpoint on the two 'Pennsylvanian' topics, using sources such as the Gubernatorial debate between Corbett and Wolf as well as several articles (local though). To be honest, the comment section of some of these articles will be used as well - these loaded, biased bits of text provide an insight into the mind of some Pennsylvanian voters.

Education

Probably the largest issue on hand, the most damaging to Tom Corbett in this election, is education in Pennsylvania. Wolf claims that during Corbett's term, funding for education was slashed $1 billion, even when he had the option not to. However, Corbett insists that that was a lie - in fact, he says that he increased Pennsylvanian education spending to the highest it has ever been in history, from "$8.6 billion to over $10 billion". He also claims that Rendell was the original cause for the education budget problem - not him.

Corbett has not expressed any plans to increase education funding, instead, he explains that it is more important to focus the money correctly.

Interestingly, not many comments where directed towards the education issue. One comment in particular that I found interesting mentioned how strange it was the Pennsylvania is experiencing a booming gas drilling - yet cannot afford to educate it's own children - 1 point versus Corbett.

Tax

Also discussed heavily during the debate, taxation is one of the topics everyone is watching - especially the middle class. This election, Corbett is not giving the no-tax guarantee he did last election, meaning whichever way you vote, income taxes will probably go up for us. However, he promises to try his best not to raise them - instead, he will look into directing the funds correctly.

Oh boy, were there a lot of comments concerning taxing. They were mainly divided along the Republican view of "I don't want more taxes dumped on me like Democrats always do; he's just going to be another Obama!" or the Democratic... well, there were no Democrat-loaded comments on this.
